I was recently playing at a Limit Texas Hold 'Em game when there were only three players in. The river card had just been displayed and one player bet. He had nothing and was trying to buy the pot.

The next player to act had made a pair of deuces, and he called the bettor. The third player had made a pair of sevens, and there was a Jack and a 10 on the board. He thought a moment and then called.

The bluffer showed his Ace high, whereupon the next player to show turned over the deuce in his hand that matched the deuce on the board. He then exclaimed, "I knew you were bluffing!" Well as we know the third player showed his middle pair and took the pot.

As we play poker our brain collects various bits of information that we observe or hear. The brain then processes and stores that information for us. In short, our brains work like computers. Soon you may get a "feeling" or "hunch". This is your brain trying to tell you something. Just like your computer does when you try to save a file with the same name. A little "warning" pops up. Your brain is doing the same thing. Your brain is telling you, "I've seen this move before by this player and he was bluffing".

So here is our big mistake: Not trusting your brain, your instincts, and your experience. You must trust these in poker to maximize profits.

Had the second player, who had correctly put his opponent on a bluff, RAISED instead of called, he would have won the pot. The middle pair could not call a bet and a raiser with two overcards on the board.

The leader of the group, Darse Billings, titled his Ph.D. thesis, "Algorithms and Assessment in Computer Poker." If you have the time and are willing to exert the effort, he essentially lays out the road map of teaching computers how to play poker, particularly how to deal with misinformation (bluffing) and incomplete information (not seeing your opponents' hole-cards), with suggestions about the implications for broader problems of decision-making in real-time, dynamic, complex situations.

Soon enough, with big minds like these guys developing products, my feeling here is that there is going to be software, where the term "BOT" simply won't do justice to the depths and capabilities of poker software of the future.

What makes an online poker player good? That's a tough question. I suppose there are many answers that one could put forth. I think one of the most important aspects is patience. That could be said of most things I suppose. But when playing poker online, it is a must. There are too many times that players will go crazy and do stuff they would never do in a live game in a brick and mortar casino. When that happens, if you don't show patience you can get caught up in the crazy action and then before you know it, you are calling an all in with sub par cards. And you know what that leads too.. yep....A big loss of chips if you don't hit just right. And possibly losing all your chips and getting bounced out of the tournament.

If you are playing in a live ring game, you are assured of losing a lot of money. Even if you play small stakes, enough of those dumb moves and the small losses add up quickly. With patience you will side step those land mines and your bankroll will not take hits, and as a result, the ole' bankroll stays healthy. At least healthier than if you were playing without patience.

How do you develop patience? First of all it isn't easy for most people. But you are most likely to be successful if you develop some rules that you adhere to while playing. One rule that is good to obey is make sure you don't play starting cards that are not strong. This would be really small pairs, unless in late position. Middle cards that aren't of the same suit and close together. One mistake a lot of players make, is playing with a K-9 off suit. Even when the two cards are suited, it is still a big gamble. Larger than one should take on if they are trying to preserve their stack of chips. If you step into a pot with a marginal hand, you are facing two dangers. One is that there is certainly going to be a player or two with strong cards. Secondly, there will be some player who will do what I'm warning against and will get extremely lucky and hit the river card to make his hand and squeeze you out. If you play marginal hands, then at times that lucky player will be you. But it won't happen enough to you to make up for all the losses you'll experience with crappy starting hands.

The best thing that you can do to help develop patience, is set down some sort of rule concerning what cards you'll start with based on your position in relation to the button. This is especially true online, as you don't have the luxury of being able to see your opponents and try and read them to discover their intentions or level of strength. The only thing that you can do in that area is try and read betting patterns. That is a task that is much harder than it may seem. Some people are good at it, but for the most part, it's a relatively small group of players that are successful at it. Making sure you're starting hands are strong is one of the best ways to physically develop patience.

It is not an uncommon occurrence for the new poker player to stride into a club, sit at a table and not understand a word being spoken. This is not a conspiracy against the new guy, these players are using terms and abbreviations that they have picked up from long experience in clubs and casinos. Poker is a game rife with special words and ideas. This article is particularly meant for the beginner who is playing online and cannot decipher the chat messages posted on the board in the poker rooms and forums.

We will begin with the most obvious, and that is with the ever-popular game of Texas hold'em. You have your choice of limit, pot limit and no limit games. Anywhere from two to ten players may engage in a Texas hold'em session. The cards are dealt by the "dealer" whose position at the table is designated by a unique "button" and the one doing the dealing may be referred to as "the button." This person is not the same as a casino dealer who makes his living at it while being paid by the casino and cannot participate in the game.

In back of the dealer are two players who make bets blindly. Only the table limit keeps the lid on their bets. They cannot bet over the particular table's limit. The first blind bet is for half of the table limit and is termed the small blind, the second player places a bet for the full table limit, the big blind. So, if the table limit $2/$4, the small blind will be for $2 and the big blind for $4. You often see abbreviations which designate the player's position. SB stands for small blind and BB denotes the big blind. Of course this seems too easy and it is. SB can also mean small bet and BB big bet, having nothing to do with blind. Be aware of this and distinguish between them while engaged in play.

The first move is always made by the small blind player. Because of this, his position is counted as the first position. The button, or dealer, plays last and is counted as whatever that number is depending on the number of players at the table. The second move is by the big blind and the third player is still in an early position and "under the gun" or UTG. Following are the next two positions also considered "early" are known as UTG +1 and UTG + 2. Are you still with me?

So, moving right along, the next three players are part of the middle position or MP1, MP2, and MP3. And the "late" positions consist of the player right before the button and is referred to as the cutoff or CO. Bringing up the rear is the button player.

Those positions listed above exist for a Texas hold'em game of ten players. Less players than ten and an appropriate number of positions are eliminated.

The first step of the game is called the preflop, during which each player is dealt two pocket cards. Three "streets" follow the preflop: the flop, the turn (the fourth street), and the river (the fifth street). During these rounds community cards are laid out on the table (also "the board"), called after the relevant streets: first three flop cards, then one turn and one river card. Flop cards of different suits are called a rainbow.

Texas Hold 'Em Poker is more commonly known as 'Hold 'Em' poker and is one of the most popular games played in casinos, card rooms and online. The Turn

After the Flop the player sitting directly left of the button decides on their play, and the game continues clockwise. Players can only check if no bet has yet been made on a round, and the value of wagers begins at the lower level of the stake structure. When all players have taken action the fourth community card is added (the Turn).

The River

The fifth community card is added at the end of the third round which plays in the same way as the previous rounds but minimum bets are set to the upper limit of the table structure.

Now that the fifth and final community card has been dealt the final round commences, again by the first active players to the left of the button. Once more upper limit bets are used. Once all players have played their hand all those still participating expose their hole cards and the player with the best hand wins the pot.

Making the Money in Online Poker Tournaments

Getting eliminated in a poker tournament is NEVER a good feeling, and the underlying idea is certainly to make it as deep as you can in every tournament you enter, but is that all there is to it? Of course you understand by now that poker is anything but a simple game, and tournament strategy requires even more layered thinking for long term success and profitability.

One of the most important factors when strategizing in poker tournaments is making the money. For some players, this isn't actually that important as their bankroll is at a level of comfort having 50, 100 and even 200 buy-ins or more, waiting in their account for the next tournament. A lot of rounders and pros will play more aggressively in this situation because they want to make the money with a healthy stack.

For most online players though, this simply isn't the case and making the money should be of paramount importance. The reason for this is because when you are actually building a bankroll, the best money to play with is that of your opponents, not your own. I call this OPM, or Other Players' Money, and if you are just starting out in online poker, then OPM is your only way to long term success, save for extraordinary luck.

The only way to start using OPM is to do your utmost to make the money in every tournament you play. It may not be optimum play for a large payout, but in the low limits it does work for several reasons. Firstly, there are enough donkey playing fools in online poker that will essentially put you in the money by virtue of their impatient, ill advised aggression.

Now adopting this philosophy normally requires tight-aggressive Harrington style play, but it's not so easy to stick to that style while witnessing the foolish players around you and their lucky, but growing stacks. My internet poker playing friend was out of town a few weeks ago, and couldn't get his regular site to work well, so knowing I had extra cash in my Party Poker account he asked for a hundred bucks to play there during his visit. Sure fine. A few hours later he lets me know he lost 2, $20+2 SNG tourneys in a row, both by bad beats. His intention at that time was to go into a $30+3 to try and make it back. He is a good player so I wasn't about to lecture him on his bankroll, but herein you will find exactly that.

The skills involved in managing your bankroll effectively are basic math, dedication to learning the game, the humility to drop down a level, and anger management. Seriously.

The above scenario is no doubt very common. In fact, poker sites love reload players like my friend. The players who know they are good, make that, "too good" to play within their own bankroll are the most profitable. Inevitably, not managing your bankroll, no matter how good you are, will result in failure. By the incontestable laws of probabilities and mathematics, this is undeniable. It doesn't matter if you are playing with a hundred bucks or a million, the result is always the same. It has been widely reported that a certain multiple WPT champion has repeatedly played over his bankroll and blown his WPT winnings. It happens on any level, as the principle is the same.

You will need basic math skills to the tune of knowing what 2, 5, and 10 percent of your bankroll is. No matter what your game you should never be playing with more than 10% of your bankroll. For example, if you deposit 100 dollars into your account, you shouldn't take more than $10 to any game. This is going to limit you to .50/1.00 limit hold'em, or $5 to $10 SNG's. You could also play an MTT for that entry, but I don't recommend that because it would be unlikely for you to place in the money. If you think you can lick this game right off and deposit $1000, then you can bring $100 bucks to any table for play. Still, this is not recommended. If you are learning, you should learn to move up to that level, rather than buy yourself into it. Trust me, you will want to avoid the painful strategy of buying yourself into a higher limit.

Enter humility.

Your humility should allow you to play at a level that forces you to become proficient and earn yourself a bankroll to move up. If that means .25/.50 hold'em, then that is your challenge. If you are going to learn, learn cheap, learn smart, and earn your way up to the next level. You will feel so much more confident when moving up a level in having conquered the level before it. Others will have paid to get in that level, and those opponents will be at your mercy.

On the other hand, once you move up a level and find yourself struggling, you need to go back down a level and refocus your efforts and education. When to do this exactly, is a question of math. If your bankroll has not increased at your new game level and comes perilously close to that 10% guideline, it's time to back up. Don't let it get below that level, because once you break the guideline once, it's much easier the next time, and the next, and the next... This will lead to mismanagement, and reloading. Here is an example: You deposited $100 and started with the 5 buck sit and go circuit and skillfully built your bankroll up to $250, where you correctly decided to move up to the $10 SNG tables. You played 7 tournaments at that level and only placed once with a second place showing. This has dropped your bankroll down to $203. Although another $10 entry is well within 10%, it is more than 5%, and since you haven't performed well, you should gather your humility and understand that there is more to learn. In this case, I would go back to the 5 buck SNG tables, and work my bankroll up to $300, before attempting your next move up. Once you reach that goal, and have proven yourself a better player, you will also have more bankroll room at the $10 level.

It is an invaluable experience to care for your bankroll in this way. I have done this several times when my bankroll needed it to the point now that when I sit a SNG table, I know that through my dedication of learning the game at each level, I am a favorite to place in that tournament. This may sound of a drastic move, but treating your bankroll with the utmost respect is the key to success.

To play is to dedicate.

It isn't going to be easy to double your bankroll at this level. Your commitment and dedication to each stage involves learning, patience, and intense observation. and is a supreme test of your core personality. Think this is overboard? I have seen players losing it to the point of me stopping them from punching a wall or tossing a laptop. These are otherwise normal acquaintances.

And then there was anger management.

This is not a funny movie. This is about battling that desire to make up lost ground by moving up a level, not down. This is where you need to know the value of your cards before you shove an all-in play at that maniacal player who has raised you yet again. By the way, at that point, he is usually holding a monster and has trained you like a monkey to step right in. If you are playing within your bankroll, losing your temper is never really an issue, because losing a game or a hand to a bad beat or poor play is not going to cripple your account. Many of your opponents will play their entire bankroll at a table or a tournament and you can take advantage of this, because in that situation, they will NEVER be able to make optimal decisions. You can surely imagine though how they will be tilting the moment they lose a big hand, because that one hand may represent 75% of their whole bankroll. Tilting after you lose a big hand in such a scenario, is pretty much inescapable. Their mindset is already looking forward to another reload, as they mentally prepare themselves to exit the table with nothing. I have seen this literally thousands of times online.

It's in the math.

When I say maximum 10%, I really try to play with 5% or less. For example, I usually have between $2,000 and $4,000 in my party poker account. When I have more I withdraw down to about $2,500 because I, personally, never want to be below $2,000 as that will restrict some of the tables/events I play at. Let's say I have $2,500 now and want to play in the Sunday Million which has an entry fee of $215. Therefore, $215 divided into $2,500 = 8.6% which is within the 10% guideline. However, let me tell you why it's STILL the wrong decision to pay for that tournament. If that is how you are investing your bankroll, you need to realize the likelihood of playing that circuit profitably. In other words, you have basically 10 chances to place that tourney. You may very well be able to do that however, it is not unusual to go through 10, 20 or even 40 tournaments without placing - even for the pros. If multi table tournaments are your game, you should be looking to have a bankroll of about 50 buy-ins. That is how dry tournaments can get. Using the 50 buy-in formula, you should have $10,000+ in your account to pay for the Sunday Million.

Think of it this way. If you are good enough to profit in this tournament, then you should easily be able to win a qualifier to get in it for about 5% to 10% of the entry fee. If you can't win one of those tourneys, filled with rookies, then you have no justification for paying the big tourney entry fee outright.

Improving your game and learning strategies at each level are clearly imperative skills in managing your bankroll, but one depends on the other, so in essence you need to train yourself in both and reap the rewards as you advance.

The reason people lose money playing hands such as an ace with another small card is that you will only find out whether you are ahead after parting with money. For example if you hold Ace-8 and pair the ace on the flop you do not know whether your opponent has a higher side card. If instead you pair the 8 then there is still a risk that your opponent has a higher pair.

Reason #3 - Table And Site Selection

When it comes to the quality and experience level opponents, all online sites are not equal. Taking the time to locate the 'fishiest' sites for your preferred game and geographical location can lead to higher profits over time. Likewise you should not sit down at the first available table at your preferred stakes. Taking the time to watch the tables to find out where the least experienced opposition are located can easily turn a losing session into a winning one.

Reason #4 - Calling Too Often

Winning poker requires a positive and aggressive style of play. The reason for this is twofold. Firstly if you do not raise and bet then you will never give your opponents an opportunity to fold their hands. Secondly, if you wait for 'monster hands' before betting and raising then observant opponents will spot this - and refuse to pay you off. Aggression with marginal hands and bluffs thus disguises those times when you have a strong holding.

Texas Holdem Poker Tournament Strategy - Starting Hands

Welcome to the fifth in my Texas Holdem Poker Strategy Series, focusing on no limit Texas Holdem poker tournament play and associated strategies. In this article, we’ll examine starting hand decisions.

It may seem obvious, but deciding which starting hands to play, and which ones to skip playing, is one of the most important Texas Holdem poker decisions you'll make. Deciding which starting hands to play begins by accounting for several factors:

* Starting Hand "groups" (Sklansky made some good suggestions in his classic "Theory of Poker" book by David Sklansky)

* Your table position

* Number of players at the table

* Chip position

Sklansky originally proposed some Texas Holdem poker starting hand groups, which turned out to be very useful as general guidelines. Below you'll find a "modified" (enhanced) version of the Sklansky starting hands table. I adapted the original Sklansky tables, which were "too tight" and rigid for my liking, into a more playable approach that are used in the Poker Sidekick poker odds calculator. Here's the key to these starting hands:

Groups 1 to 8: These are essentially the same scale as Sklansky originally proposed, although some hands have been shifted around to improve playability and there is no group 9.

Group 30: These are now "questionable" hands, hands that should be played rarely, but can be reasonably played occasionally in order to mix things up and keep your opponents off balance. Loose players will play these a bit more often, tight players will rarely play them, experienced players will open with them only occasionally and randomly.

The table below is the exact set of starting hands that Poker Sidekick uses when it calculates starting poker hands. If you use Poker Sidekick, it will tell you which group each starting hand is in (if you can't remember them), along with estimating the "relative strength" of each starting hand. You can just print this article and use it as a starting hand reference.

Group 1: AA, KK, AKs

Group 2: QQ, JJ, AK, AQs, AJs, KQs

Group 3: TT, AQ, ATs, KJs, QJs, JTs

Group 4: 99, 88, AJ, AT, KQ, KTs, QTs, J9s, T9s, 98s

Group 5: 77, 66, A9s, A5s-A2s, K9s, KJ, KT, QJ, QT, Q9s, JT, QJ, T8s, 97s, 87s, 76s, 65s

Group 6: 55, 44, 33, 22, K9, J9, 86s

All other hands not shown (virtually unplayable).

So, those are the enhanced Sklasky Texas Holdem poker starting hand tables.

The later your position at the table (dealer is latest position, small blind is earliest), the more starting hands you should play. If you're on the dealer button, with a full table, play groups 1 thru 6. If you're in middle position, reduce play to groups 1 thru 3 (tight) and 4 (loose). In early position, reduce play to groups 1 (tight) or 1 thru 2 (loose). Of course, in the big blind, you get what you get.

As the number of players drops into the 5 to 7 range, I recommend tightening up overall and playing far fewer, premium hands from the better positions (groups 1 - 2). This is a great time to forget about chasing flush and straight draws, which puts you at risk and wastes chips.

As the number of players drops to 4, it's time to open up and play far more hands (groups 1 - 5), but carefully. At this stage, you're close to being in the money in a Texas Holdem poker tournament, so be extra careful. I'll often just protect my blinds, steal occasionally, and try to let the smaller stacks get blinded or knocked out (putting me into the money). If I'm one of the small stacks, well, then I'm forced to pick the best hand I can get and go all-in and hope to double-up.

When the play is down to 3, it's time to avoid engaging with big stacks and hang on to see if we can land 2nd place, heads-up. I tend to tighten up a bit here, playing very similar to when there's just 3 players (avoiding confrontation unless I'm holding a pair or an Ace or a King, if possible).

Once you're heads-up, well, that's a topic for a completely different article, but in general, it's time to become extraordinarily aggressive, raise a lot, and become "pushy".

In tournaments, it's always important to keep track of your chips stack size relative to the blinds and everyone else's stacks. If you're short on chips, then play far fewer hands (tigher), and when you do get a good hand, extract as many chips as you can with it. If you're the big stack, well, you should avoid unnecessary confrontation, but use your big stack position to push everyone around and steal blinds occasionally as well - without risking too many chips in the process (the other players will be trying to use you to double-up, so be careful).

Well, that's a quick overview of an improved set of starting hands and some general rules for adjusting starting hand play based upon game conditions throughout the tournament.

1) Calling Too Much.

Let's have a closer look at online poker tells in online games like Texas Holdem. These online tells differ quite a bit from traditional ones, as we'll soon see. If you don't know about these particular poker secrets and you play online poker, then you're at a significant disadvantage vs. your competition. Chances are, experienced online players have been using these against you for quite some time without you ever even knowing it...

What is a "tell"? A traditional poker tell is any habit, behavior, or physical reaction that gives other players more information about your hand. In offline poker, a shaking, nervous hand is often an indication of a player with a strong hand. Another common poker tell would be looking down at my chips when I first see my pocket cards or the flop - a sign that I'm thinking about betting and have a good hand, so I'm seeing how many chips I have to work with.

Several of the poker tells listed here are useful for both online and offline poker. However, since we lack the ability to read opponents physical expressions and reactions when playing online, the number and type online poker tells actually available to us are much more limited, and so the ones we do have available become that much more important to be aware of and recognize.

Caro's Book of Poker Tells is the classic treatise on the subject. Most of the poker tells that work in offline games rely upon physical observations of how a player reacts or behaves, so these kinds of tells don't help online since we can't observe the player physically. So when playing online, there are other telltale signals that we can watch for that give us an edge.

According to a recent survey, the top three online poker tells are:

* Quickness to respond, reported by 76% of respondents - a very fast check can indicate a weak hand, quick bets on the turn or river can often indicate a strong hand.

* Slowness to respond, reported by 73% of respondents - a pause followed by a check can often indicate weakness, while a delay followed by a raise often indicates strength.

* Automatic play, reported by 68% of respondents - a lazy approach to the auto buttons lets a player slip into a set pattern of play. Any breaks in this pattern are clear tells.

So, what can we actually use as online tells?

Using Check Boxes to Gain Information

Online poker rooms offer the use of check boxes for actions such as "Fold", "Check/Fold", "Raise", or "Raise Any", etc. While convenient for those of us who lack the patience to focus on the game for extended periods of time, the use of checkboxes can be very damaging to your overall winnings. You can determine when a player has used a check box, because their action comes immediately after the player before them acts. You can use this knowledge to your advantage if a player consistently uses checkboxes.

When a player has pre-selected "Check" or "Check/Fold", it should be obvious that he doesn't have a strong hand that he cares much about, and is likely on a draw or just waiting to fold, so you can determine the player likely has no hand or a weak hand. If their hand is immediately folded after the prior player acts, you know they are using checkboxes and can begin watching this more closely. When they don't use a checkbox, then they're taking more time to consider how to play a better hand...

Similarly, a player who uses the "Call Any" check box is likely to be on a draw and not yet made a good enough hand to bet or raise with, but is definitely not ready to fold at this point.

Poker tells are not 100% accurate, yet they often provide us with enough additional information to help us confirm what we may already suspect. Over time you can get a sense for how these players use checkboxes and begin to draw conclusions about your opponents hand strength and mode of operation as a result.

If you detect that someone is on a draw, for example, you can often bet or raise the pot a bit and push them right out, since it'd be too expensive to continue with their draw without free cards or calling minimum bets.

The fact that a player feels so strongly about a hand (good or bad) to make a decision before even seeing the how other players will bet or act is a poker tell about this person's inexperience with online play and often about their hand strength.

If you use checkboxes, be highly self-aware of how they'll be perceived by the other players and use them to your advantage. If you have a good hand that you're wanting to slow-play, use a check-box to quickly "Check" or "Call" with, feigning weakness. If you have a weaker hand, are on a draw, avoid using the checkbox altogether and act like you're really thinking about how to play that hand.

If you're bluffing, make a raise quickly and confidently (using a checkbox, if applicable), to signal confidence in your hand. Of course, it's always best to mix things up a bit so players can't predict your actions. The idea is to keep opponents guessing or throw them off in the wrong direction so you can profit from their mistake - that's how winners operate, through carefully orchestrated deception and mixing things up constantly.

Speed of Play

Online poker rooms limt the amount of time each player has to take action. Often, the speed at which a player responds can be a good poker tell. Generally, a quick bet is a sign of weakness. A delayed bet or action can be a sign of strength since the player is spending time calculating how best to play what is perceived to be a good or strong hand, how much to bet, etc.

Keep an eye on how much time it takes players to make their decision and take action and remember it at the end of a hand. Then, when you get a chance to see their cards in a showdown, verify what kinds of hands they act on slowly and what kinds of hands they act quickly upon. Speed of play is the most common and easiest online poker tell to spot.

The instant call after you bet: Most players who call your bet immediately have a weak calling hand. These players want you to believe they have a stronger hand and hope that you will not bet into them again.

The delayed check: Most players who take longer than normal before checking to you do not want you to bet. They are attempting to display strength because they want to see the next card for free.

The delayed bet: When an opponent thinks for a long time and then bets, they will usually be holding a strong hand.

The instant bet/raise on the river: The player who utilizes this move will usually be holding a very strong hand, often times it'll be trips. By raising or betting so quickly, they are trying to make you think they are bluffing. This move can also be used on the turn and generally, though not as frequently, denotes strength.

The bet into on the turn: When a player has checked and called on the flop and then bets into you on the turn, it can indicate weakness or that they've made their hand. This type of bet often means that they picked up their draw or that they are semi-bluffing with a draw they picked up on the flop. Strongly consider raising if you have a decent hand.

What about your online play style? Do you exhibit these kinds of online poker tell play behaviors and patterns? If so, be aware of it and deliberately mix things up so that you're decision-making processes aren't so easy to spot and lock onto, or simply take a similar amount of time for each action you make, preventing people from drawing any kind of conclusions at all based upon timing.

Opponents Starting Hand Fold-to-Flop Ratio

Keep an eye on whether or not a player folds a lot of garbage starting hands (a 'tight' player) or is playing at just about every pot that comes along - a 'loose' player. This information can be used to help determine the strength of a players overall game. If the players folds most of the time, beware since this player is pretty tight or solid and only plays good hands.

If the opponent plays most every hand, then you can probably take advantage of this and win if you play good cards consistently against such a player. These kinds of loose players like to gamble, and sometimes they'll get lucky and pick up some cards. It's best to just remain patient and wait for your opportunity. You're better off just playing the odds and good hands in order to take advantage of this player's aggressive, loose style when you land a good, solid hand.

Chatting

Just like in offline games, the "chattiness" of a player can be used as a tell. Generally, a player who is highly chatty that suddenly goes quiet is now busy thinking about playing some good cards, figuring out how best to play the hand.

Alternatively, a player who suddently becomes antagonistic may be bluffing and hoping this demonstration of exhuberance will add to the strength of his bluff and cause you to fold. When you recognize a tell, generally do the opposite of what you think the player is trying to cause you to do.

Self-Awareness

It's important for you to remain aware of your play style and table image at all times. It's best to keep everyone off balance by mixing things up. Become suddenly aggressive and play looser (and risk the minimum amount you can, usually early in the game before blinds go up if it's a tournament), then become tight again. Keep everyone guessing.

Anyone who is familiar with poker, especially texas holdem, knows that pocket aces is the best starting hand you can have out of a total of 169 possible starting hands. Why? Because before the flop this hand is way ahead of every other combination. A pair of aces beats everything else. However, once the flop comes, aces can be way behind very quickly.

Lets cover some odds. Pocket kings through pocket twos all have about an 11% chance of flopping trips against pocket aces. This number has been rounded up slightly. It also has about an 8% chance of catching by the river if trips don't happen on the flop. So roughly 20% of the time pocket aces is going to lose to any other pocket pair. So what happens if we introduce another pocket pair into the equation? For this example we have pocket aces up against pocket kings and pocket sixes. For those of you who are very detail oriented the aces are of clubs and diamonds, the kings are spades and hearts, and the sixes are clubs and spades. Guess what happened to the winning percentage for the aces? It went down of course! The pocket aces before the flop are now only about 65% to win with a 0.25% chance of a split pot. The king before the flop is about 19% to win and the sixes are about 16%. So what happens if someone spikes that 11% for trips? Aces now only have about a 14% chance to win.

Now let's examine a 6 handed table. The percentages may surprise you. Pocket aces against the following hands is only about 33% to win - king queen suited of spades (16% to win), seven two offsuit (8%), three four of hearts (18%), jack ten offsuit (10%), and eight ten suited of diamonds (13%). I'm sure those numbers don't add up to 100%, its all roughly rounded. Three four suited is the surprising one. Then again the aces don't share a suit with it, but the same applies for king queen suited, which has a lower chance of hitting. This has to do with the fact that three four suited can be both an up or down straight draw (2-6 or 3-7 or even 4-8), whereas the odds against the up straight draw happening for king queen has diminished due to two aces being missing from the odds.

Imagine what happens if you throw in another 3 or four players for a full table. Those odds go down even more. You have to push out your opponents when you're holding pocket aces or you will more than likely go broke. That's just how the hand plays out. Less players in the hand means better odds for you. Truth be told you could be holding 72 offsuit and your odds of winning increase when you only have 1 opponent, especially when you figure in bluffing, table image, etc.

The problem with pocket aces, especially online, is when you raise a lot of players know that you're holding something good and they want to crack it. Online players know that aces get cracked more often in online poker so they're willing to try it. The reason behind this is simple, it's not a completely random shuffle as it's a computer program trying to randomly shuffle. Most people can't do a perfect shuffle so imagine trying to get a computer program that understands only 1's and 0's (on off) as commands trying to do it. With so many variables that come into play it would be very difficult to include every possible variable. People mess up shuffling, computers can't mess up, thus probabilities are slightly different online than at your local home game. At your home game cards typically don't go 1,2,1,2 so yeah, odds vary from place to place. Sad but true. This doesn't change the fact that you must push out as many opponents as possible when holding aces. Even if the odds change 20% in favor of your opponent due to a bad shuffle you still stand a better chance of beating one opponent than nine.

The Flush

For example if player 1 has 6-9-10-J-K of one suit he would lose to a player with 3-4-7-8-A of one suit - the ace high flush beating the K high flush regardless of the rank of the remaining cards.

The Straight

A straight is 5 cards in order, for example 5-6-7-8-9 regardless of suits. Aces can make low or high straights (A-2-3-4-5 or 10-J-Q-K-A). Straights do not wrap around from high to low, for example Q-K-A-2-3 is not a straight!

3 of a kind (Trips)

Any 3 of the same cards are known as trips. Where 2 players end up with the same trips the rank if the remaining cards is taken into account. For example if both players end up with 9-9-9 but one holds an Ace while the highest card the other holds is a ten then the player with 9-9-9-X-A would win the hand.

2 pairs

2 pair hands are fairly low in the poker hand ranking chart and are beaten by all of the hands mentioned above. Again when 2 players have the same 2 pairs the one with the higher unpaired card will win the hand. In a game with community cards such as texas Holdem the highest card may already be on the board leading to a split pot. Remember to compare the best 5-card hands in this situation.

1 Pair

Single pairs are near the bottom of poker hand rankings - as with 2 pair and trips hands kickers (highest unpaired cards) may come into play where 2 or more players hold the same pair.

High Card Only

In the unusual event of reaching a showdown with no players holding any of the hands above the highest card wins. If (for example) both players hold an Ace then the next highest card is taken into account.
